Marriage Equality Attorney Outreach Planning Meeting
Join other D.C. area attorneys for an open meeting on Wednesday, May 20th, to form a working group to involve the D.C. legal community in the fight for marriage equality.
Across the nation, momentum is building in favor of marriage equality. The Iowa Supreme Court ruled that gays cannot be excluded from civil marriage; the Vermont and Maine legislatures voted to recognize marriage equality; and Governor Patterson has introduced a bill to establish marriage equality in New York. Organizations across the nation are mobilizing to protect these newly granted marriage equality rights and to expand the number of states in which gays can marry.
Momentum is building here in D.C. too. The D.C. City Council and Mayor have now approved recognition for same-sex marriages from other jurisdictions. Many view this as a test run for legislation that would grant full marriage equality in the District of Columbia. Although the Council has shown an impressive willingness to lead on this issue, it cannot move forward without broad community support. To protect against a voter initiative and congressional interference, an active, diverse grassroots effort is essential.
We will discuss outreach, fundraising, lobbying and litigation support, and other ways that the legal community can contribute to this historic advance in civil rights, both in the District of Columbia and beyond.
Wednesday May 20th, 7:00 pm
Mayer Brown LLP, 12th Floor Conference Room
1909 K Street NW
