Pro Bono Estate Clinic - Tuesday August 25th

Would you prepare a Will for a Whitman-Walker Clinic patient?

GAYLAW volunteers help staff Whitman-Walker Legal Service's pro bono estate planning clinic on the second Tuesday of each month.  In August, there is a special need. We are looking for GAYLAW attorneys to staff the August 25 pro bono estate planning clinic.

Volunteers will be matched with a Whitman-Walker client for an hour-long meeting on August 25 at WWC Legal Services' offices (located at 1701 14th St., NW (14th & R Streets), Washington, DC 20009).  Meetings are generally scheduled between 6:00 and 8:00 in the evening, depending on client availability. Volunteer training and assistance is available. Please contact Max Barger at maxbarger@gmail.com if you are interested in volunteering for the estate planning clinic.

We also need volunteers for the regularly scheduled GAYLAW estate planning clinics for the remainder of the year. Please consider volunteering your time to this worthy cause.

National Equality March DC Host Committee Kick-Off Meeting Aug 18!

What: National Equality March: DC Host Committee Kick-Off featuring national equality march local organizers and solidarity activists.

When: Tuesday, August 18 | 7pm

Where: St. Stephen’s Church | 1525 Newton Street, NW || Columbia Heights – green line metro

ABOUT THE MARCH
n the last year the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights movement has come out with renewed confidence at
the possibilities that lie ahead of us in the fight for real change and
real equality. On October 10-11, 2009, we will bring that fight on to the national stage as we gather in Washington, DC to demand equal protection in all matters governed by civil law in all fifty states.

Located right in the heart of the action, those of us in Washington, DC have an especially important role to play in the lead-up to the October meet on the mall. As such, we are reaching out to all LGBT rights activists, grassroots organizations, social justice activists from across movement struggles, organized labor, DC communities, and anyone interested in organizing for the October demonstration to join local National Equality March organizers on Tuesday, August 18 at 7pm as we launch the DC Host Committee. We look forward to begin to organize locally and strategize on what needs to be done to bring together the DC community through the march and beyond.

Now is the time to let the government know that we will not wait for
equality.

Interfaith Alliance Announcement

While many faith traditions have grappled with issues of equality, including same-gender marriage, much of that work has been viewed through a scriptural lens. Interfaith Alliance seeks to shift the perspective on LGBT equality from that of problem to solution, from a scriptural argument to a religious freedom agreement, and to address the issue of equality as informed by our Constitution.

Same-Gender Marriage and Religious Freedom: A Call to Quiet Conversations and Public Debates by Interfaith Alliance President, Rev. Dr. C. Welton Gaddy, offers a diversity of ideas based on Interfaith Alliance’s unique advocacy for religious freedom and interfaith exchange. This projects’s cross-denominational nature is at the core of Interfaith Alliance’s effort to spark national conversation and action.

Please drop by and pick up your copies of Same-Gender Marriage and Religious Freedom: A Call to Quiet Conversations and Public Debate.
