Primer on Parentage Rights of Same-Sex Couples in DC, MD, and VA, sponsored by DC Bar

In 2009 the District of Columbia passed the most far-reaching parentage act in the country. This course will discuss the new law and its practical impact. Faculty will compare the D.C. law to Maryland and Virginia parentage and adoption laws affecting same-sex couples.  Panelists will update you on second parent adoption, birth certificates, parentage “by intent,” surrogacy, and assisted reproductive technology issues.  You also will learn about important developments in recent case law.  Anyone who deals with adoption and family law issues affecting children in the District and neighboring jurisdictions should attend this class to update his or her knowledge on this important and evolving area of the law.
